TSS Earnslaw timings and sailing details

The TSS Earnslaw sails from Steamer Wharf in Queenstown every day of the year except during its annual maintenance survey. Departures run on a fixed two-hour grid and the season decides how many of those slots operate. Peak summer runs all seven. Deep winter runs three.

Lunch and dinner cruise times

The Gourmet BBQ at Colonel's Homestead runs as either a long lunch or a dinner service, both including the return cruise and the farm show.

  • Lunch sittings: 11am and 1pm, year-round. Both slots run in every season the ship is operating, including deep winter. The 1pm sitting is the first to waitlist in summer. → See TSS Earnslaw lunch cruise options and prices

On the cruise-only option you stay aboard at Walter Peak; you can't disembark unless you've pre-booked a farm experience.

Add 20 minutes for check-in, and another 30 minutes if you're driving and need to find parking in central Queenstown.

Crossing times differ by vessel: 45 minutes on the TSS Earnslaw, 35 minutes on the Spirit of Queenstown catamaran. That matters during the maintenance window.

🗓️ 2027 annual maintenance closure
  • The TSS Earnslaw goes into dry dock for annual maintenance from 22 May to 1 July 2027.
  • During the closure, cruises to Walter Peak operate aboard the Spirit of Queenstown instead, covering the same route. Guests booked on affected dates are automatically transferred.
  • If your travel dates fall within this window, check the live calendar for Spirit of Queenstown sailing times, or plan your visit before 22 May or after 1 July.

Best time to take a TSS Earnslaw cruise

  • Spring (Sep–Nov): Mild temperatures, fewer crowds than summer.
  • Summer (Dec–Feb): Longest daylight hours, only season with a 9pm sailing.
  • Autumn (Mar–May): Cooler air, autumn foliage around the lake.
  • Winter (Jun–Aug): Snow-capped peaks, reduced sailing schedule (3 a day).
  • Earlier daytime sailings: Best if you want to keep the rest of your Queenstown day open. They suit cruise-only plans, farm visits, or travelers adding another short activity later.
  • Meal-based sailings: Best if your cruise is centered around Walter Peak dining. Lunch or dinner options shape the day for you, so treat the sailing as the anchor activity rather than a quick scenic detour.
  • Weekdays (Monday–Friday) tend to be quieter, with more room to explore the ship and engine room without a wait.
  • Weekends, especially during December–March and NZ school holidays, bring more families and tour groups, along with higher demand for tickets.

What to know

  • Does the cruise run in bad weather? Almost always. The Earnslaw sails in rain, cloud and cold without issue, and the enclosed decks and Promenade Café mean poor weather doesn't ruin the trip. Severe conditions, high winds in particular, can cause cancellation, but it's uncommon.
  • If the operator cancels, you're entitled to a full refund or a transfer to another date.
  • What to bring: non-slip shoes, a warm jacket regardless of season, sunglasses and sunscreen. The open decks are exposed and the wind across the lake makes it feel several degrees colder than the forecast, especially on the 9am and evening sailings.
